Why is a book a good gift?

Books in the home are the most proven predictor of a good education and professional success. Data from studies conducted on 160,000 people from 31 countries proved a number of relationships. First, teenagers who had at least 80 books in their homes achieve better results in school than children from homes where there are no books.

"The correlation between books at home and better academic results is somewhat obvious, but another element is more surprising." – says Maria Deskur, president of the Universal Reading Foundation and head of the Słowne publishing house. "Researchers have confirmed that people raised in homes with books, who did not finish college, as adults have reading, mathematical and technological competences at the same level as university graduates from homes with few books, and they have the same competences at a higher level than university graduates raised in homes without books. However, these are very surprising results - they show the real superpower of books. It turns out that a library at home from childhood gives us higher competences (including mathematical and technical!) than a university diploma!" – Deskur strongly emphasizes.

Having at least 80 volumes at home seems like a private university. Meanwhile, 30% Polish families do not have a single book to read at home. The above two sentences, put together, caused concern and reaction. Hence the idea for the campaign #GoodBookGoodGift (#DobraKsiążkaDobryPrezent).

#GoodBookGoodGift on any occasion!

"I grew up surrounded by books. One of the first gifts I remember receiving was a two-volume edition of "The Teutonic Knights." – says Irek Piecuch, partner of DGTL, member of the FPC Board of Trustees. "For me, a home library is synonymous with home warmth and relaxation. That is why the holidays are a good time to create or expand a home library. The cooperation between DGTL and the Foundation to date has already resulted in several initiatives. We have introduced a book allowance for the entire team: every quarter, each of our employees can order books worth PLN 100. We are already after the third edition and we ourselves did not expect such a positive reception. On our websites, we publish #RecenzjeDGTL, i.e. short personal comments on the books we recommend. Today, thanks to the inspiration from the Foundation, we are going a step further. Together, we are launching the #GoodBookGoodGift (#DobraKsiążkaDobryPrezent) campaign. We want to encourage Poles to give each other books; under the Christmas tree, but also for other occasions. Of course, the campaign has an open formula, we invite everyone to get involved." – he adds.

DGTL Kibil Piecuch i Wspólnicy SKA is a law firm that is involved in many social projects. Starting from adopting the art departments at the National Museum and supporting young Polish artists, to pro bono cooperation with foundations working in the field of education (Koźmiński Foundation), in the field of neurodiversity (a/typowi Foundation) or in the field of popularizing reading (Universal Reading Foundation).
